01. Get Ready; Singers: Benny Dayal & Gerard Thompson ; Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar; My Rating: 3/5

Get ready for some new experience! That’s what the lyrics say, not me! This MJ inspired number definitely is impressive, only for two reasons: 1) Bass Guitar – Excellent work & 2) Aalap in the background (by Gerard Thompson?) in the beginning. Apart from these, this reminds you of “Just beat it” by MJ. Lyrics are quite good, but not as impressive as “Theneeril Snehidham”, a similar number from Subramaniyapuram; Moreover, the music takes over that you hardly get to understand the lyrics. A cakewalk to Benny Dayal who has done similar numbers before.

02. Jilla Vittu; Singer : Thanjai Selvi; Lyrics: Mohan Rajan; My Rating: 4/5

Confessions of a “Call girl” can be an apt title for this song. Thanks to James for bringing in some fresh voice. It’s quite common for us to have listened to a pathos song which will be kind of slowly paced melody. Breaking this convention, James has presented us with a “Naatuppura mettu”. One might start to tap the foot when the song starts, but if they pay attention – the lyrics are a little too heavy. It’s an autobiography of a lady venting out about her life that was forcefully messed up as a result of “poverty”. To me, this song is quite alluring & distinct from all aspects. A number to watch out!

03. Kannil Anbai; Singer: Padmanabhan; Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar; My rating: 2.5/5

The only melody of the album and hence should have been handled better. A total let down by the composer! The tune sounds very familiar to a DSP / Mani Sharma number. A very mediocre composition that fails to impress despite repeated listening. Expectations were high from James after some pleasant melodies like “KangaL iraNdaal”, “Oru vetkam” & “Pesum Minsaaram”; sad that he has disappointed! Lyrics – nothing great!

04. Meyyana Inbam; Singers: Sukhwinder Singh, Benny Dayal & Sunandan; Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar; My rating: 3/5

James is not a guy who would prefer to have typical “kuthu” numbers in his albums. He has explicitly expressed his dislike towards songs like “Naaka Mukka”. However, in today’s industry, an album is considered incomplete without such a song! This song is an answer to such a requirement and it comes out in composer’s own way! From the lyrics it looks like a “Night out” song. A decent foot tapper despite it reminds of the remix versions of “Aasai nooru vagai” in Kurumbu & “Adho andha paravai pola vaazha vendum” in Aayirathil Oruvan [2009]. Nothing noteworthy about the rendition of the singers, not bad however!

05. Sughavaasi Sughavaasi; Singer: K.S. Chitra &Maalgudi Shuba ; Lyrics : Yugabharathi; My rating: 4.5/5

Aah! We do have an item number in this album, again, in James’s own way! Man, it took a while for me to digest the fact that one of the singers is the “Yedhedho ENNam vaLarthen” fame, Chitra. Awesome singing! James needs to be complimented for bringing out such a singer in her; at least I don’t remember to have heard such a genre by Chitra before. Both Chitra & Maalgudi Shuba have complemented each other very well, while it appears a piece of cake for the latter. Lyrics reveal that this is yet another song from ladies working in “dark”. Trust me, at one point, I was not able to differentiate both their voices! This is what I called innovation! Pick of the album!

My Verdict:

Avg. Score: 3.5/5. A decent album to go for! Does have a variety genres and this is good work by James Vasanthan, yet again.

Eesan: Nambinor kaividappadaar!

AadukaLam

Following the success of Polladhavan, the entire team barring the heroine decided to come together for the second time. Despite early indications that Nayantara would be playing the heroine, Trisha Krishnan was roped into portray the lead female role, her first project with Dhanush. Trisha Krishnan later pulled out of the project due to her other commitments in Bollywood. She was replaced by a Delhi based model Taapsee Pannu.

The film was previously christened as Seval, however was renamed since another film directed by Hari and starring Bharath had registered the title. Early indications suggest that the film could be based upon a true story which occurred in Madurai in the 1970s. The film was shot for more than six months in Thirunagar, Thirupparankundram and areas around.

GV Prakash, after some interesting numbers in Oram Po, Ayirathil Oruvan & Va, has done well again. Here are my views on the album.

01. Yathe Yathe; Singer: GVP; Lyrics: Snehan; My Rating: 4/5

GV Prakash has really spruced up in his attempt to become a versatile singer as well. One can’t believe that this was sung by GVP. He admits that he had sung the tracks for this song and Dhanush insisted on retaining his voice for the album. Nice attempt to “Madurai slang” at some places! He has given an excellent “love” feel to the lyrics of Snehan & his attitude is just perfect through out the song. What starts as a melody takes a turn as a nice foot tapping folk song! That’s the way to transition. Way to go boy!

02. Otha Sollaala; Singer: Velmurugan; Lyrics: Yegathesi; My Rating: 2/5

Not a great number. A wanna-be kuthu song which has shades of his earlier compositions from Veyil. New comer Velmurugan has done a neat job, however, fails to impress – possibly there was nothing in the song to create that first impression. A passing cloud song!

03. PorkaLam (Tamil Version) & Warriors (English Version; Singer & Lyricist: Yogi B; My rating: 1/5

Just because the rest of the team was a hit, it does not mean that this guy should have been roped in. Agreed that “Yengeyum Eppodhum” remix version was a good number with Yogi B chipping in with his compulsive rap; that was simply because of the Original song was a BIG hit. That does not mean that Yogi B should be brought in again and allowed to bellow with his irksome voice. To make things worse, there are two versions! Dude [Yogi B] – Do something fresh or fish-off!

04. En VeNNilave; Singers: KK; Lyrics: VIS Jayapalan; My rating: 1.5/5

A total muddled number. After some good pathos like “Ninaithu Ninaithu” in 7G Rainbow Colony, “Kadhal Valarthen” in Manmadhan, KK has been given another similar number. All I would say is the talented singer has been totally wasted with this awfully disorientated composition. There is nothing motivating for one to listen to this song fully. Better luck next time!

05. Ayyayyo; Singers: SPB, SP CharaN & Prashanthini; Lyrics: Snehan; My rating: 3.5/5

Well, here is yet another impressive number of the album. To my knowledge, this is the first time the father-son duo has come together in singing a song (can’t get the rationale though!). Typical love song lyrics which is notable even if it has shades of “Inji Idupazhagaa”, a ILayaraaja composition from Devar Magan & “Urugudhey Marugudhey” from Veyil, composed by GVP himself. May be the rendition of SPB arrests you once again?

06. A love blossoms; My rating: 4/5

Call it a “theme song” or “instrumental” performed by Navin Iyer, this short piece of music & humming is fascinating. Sounds like a typical Dhanush theme!

My Verdict:

Avg. Score: 3/5. A decent album from GVP! He is capable of much more than this for sure. May be he needs a big break to compose for a real big-time director, the only best till date was Aayirathil Oruvan for Selvaraghavan. May be the Selva-GVP duo comes back well in their forthcoming projects Maruvan & Sindubad [Courtesy: Wikipedia]

Man-Madhan-Ambu

The much awaited music of hype “Man-Madhan-Ambu” is here. After listening to them, I felt like writing reviews for each and every number of this album. Hence, needless to mention that these are my personal opinion and if it means to “hurt” anyone, it’s absolutely INTENTIONAL! ;-)

01. Dhagudu Dhattham ; Singer : Kamal Haasan; Lyrics : Kamal Haasan; My Rating: 2/5

After getting inspired by “Alwarpetta Aandava”, both DSP & Kamal have decided to give a similar number. While DSP has shamelessly inherited the tune from this number and also retained his “typical” mathalams (or whatever instrument it is) from his earlier compositions (?) like “Nenjam enum oorinile” from Aaru; he is also inspired by “Ho Jaaye” from Thenaali and brings in those shades in the song.

Kamal tries to give his pieces of advice, but wondering to who the intended recipient is? The verses do not seem to have any correlation to one another. Oops… just recollected that in Kamal’s books, “Pazhamozhi sonnaa anubavikkanum… aaraaya koodaadhu”. Let’s wait for the picturization to see if there’s any difference, at least!

Kamal, however, has rendered well.

02. Who's The Hero; Singer : Andrea Jeremiah; Lyrics : Kamal Haasan; My Rating: 0/5

Mr. DSP, you started with “Jo Jo Jothika” in Maayaavi and it was enjoyable. You replicated that as “Lab Dub Lab Dub” in Unakkum Enakkum, listened to it. Then you made it as “Mambo Maamiyaa” in Kandaswamy, tolerated it for Vicky’s voice. And ruthlessly you have faked it as this song. If you have lost tunes, stop composing. It’s a pity that a “Dr.” had to pen lyric for this awful copy of yours! Pathetic!

03. Neela Vaanam; Singers : Kamal Haasan & Priya Hemesh; Lyrics : Kamal Haasan; My rating: 2/5

“Vaan megam… poopoovaai thoovum”, if sung at a slower pace, it will start like this “Neela vaanam.. Neeyum naanum”. It starts real well Kamal singing unplugged! (for a moment, I thought it was Adnan Sami singing!) But, not sure why a tempo & a tune has been “forced” subsequently. And everything that follows seems “forced” and not gelling well with the start. Kamal’s claims to be an atheist, but don’t understand the reason for forcing in a verse from “Divya Prabandham” in a “carol/gospel” format. Looks like a confused men’s work. If at all something is good about this song, it is again Kamal’s rendition. Made for Kamal! Dr.jee – Consider singing only for ILayaraaja or may be AR Rahman. Rest are not worth!

04. Oyyale; Singers : Mukesh Suchitra & Karthik Kumar; Lyrics : Viveka; My rating: 1/5

Hell a lot of songs have come like this, an addition to that list. Don’t wish to spend time in reviewing any aspect of this cliché. I assume that some selfish souls would have “imposed” this song to Maddy! Poor chap, if that’s true!

05. Kamal Kavidhai; Singers(?) : Kamal Haasan & Trisha; Lyrics : Kamal Haasan; My rating: 4/5

Huh! Here is some “Kavidhai” talents of Kamal unleashed! To make DSP’s job easy, we already have some work done by AR Rahman for Iruvar (Unnodu naan vaazhndha) & Duet (Kavidhaikku poruL thandha) and it has been retained. The intention of exposing Kamal’s tamizh fluency & versatility is vivid by making Trisha pair him. She really has “just” tried to talk tamizh, not bad attempt. She has to be taught the difference between “N” &“n”, “L” & “l” etc. Kamal could not succeed or was not attempted intentionally?

Trisha’s part of this poetry about how women are considered or rather assumed in an “intimacy”. Kamal’s part seems to be an appeal by women to God on their requirements on men. Towards the end, he brings out atheism in his own way – totally confused & confusing manner.

DSP – You suck man. This is supposed to be a “kavidhai” and don’t want you shouting behind “vendum”, “vendum”. It spoils the beauty of Kamal’s rendition!

Good work by Kamal in terms of penning & rendition. Moderate rendition by Trisha.

06. Theme Of Mma; My rating: 1/5

07. Manmadan Ambu; Singer: DSP; Lyrics : Kamal Haasan; My rating: 1/5

A typical cacophony & a cliché of Kandaswamy theme song, with DSP running his mouth. Save your ears!

My Verdict:

Avg. Score: 2/5. One of worst albums from DSP who started well, however does not have enough in him to sustain in market. No wonder that he was chucked out from Telugu industry after some refreshing music of Taman has taken over there. This album is not recommended if you really want some good music.

Man-Madhan-Ambu: Isaiyil kuri thavariyadhu!
